Codefrap: Perfecting the Last 5% of AI Coding

Building a resource hub and toolset to help developers bridge the gap between AI-generated code and professional-grade technical taste.

Outcome

Launched a suite of 5+ immersive IDE themes and a library of 'Hero Recipes' for AI prompting.

Context

As AI becomes a standard part of the development workflow, a new problem has emerged: the “Last 5%.” While AI can generate the bulk of a feature, it often lacks the technical taste, visual hierarchy, and polished “feel” that defines professional software.

Problem

The core issues are:

  1. Visual Polish — Default AI outputs often lack a cohesive design system or visual hierarchy.
  2. Context Management — Providing the right context to AI is difficult and often results in bloated or irrelevant snippets.
  3. Inspiration Gap — Settling for “good enough” code because they lack the recipes to push for excellence.

Approach

I created Codefrap as a playground and resource hub to solve these issues. The project focused on three core pillars:

1. Immersive IDE Environments

I designed a series of high-contrast, immersive VS Code themes (Solar Flare, Neon Cyber, Crimson Code, etc.) to help developers “get in the zone” and maintain a high standard for their visual environment.

2. Prompting “Fraps” (Hero Recipes)

Instead of generic prompts, I developed specific “recipes” that focus on technical taste—teaching developers how to ask AI for better visual hierarchy, cleaner abstractions, and more maintainable structures.

3. The “Text Frap” Philosophy

A focus on the ergonomics of code—making sure that what we write isn’t just functional, but readable and aesthetically pleasing for the humans who eventually have to maintain it.

Outcome

Codefrap is now live at codefrap.com, offering:

  • 5+ Custom IDE Themes ready for use.
  • A curated library of prompting recipes.
  • A dedicated Editor interface for refining AI output.

Learnings

Building Codefrap reinforced that the value of a developer in the AI era is shifting from “writing syntax” to “curating excellence.” The tools we use—and the taste we apply to the final output—are what separate generic apps from great products.
